18 PhD places open for application at CDT SuMMer

NCIMB is delighted to be involved in a PhD project based at Heriot-Watt University that aims to improve understanding of the biodegradation and residence time of microplastics in the ocean.

The project is one of 18 that make up the first of three rounds of PhD scholarships at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources (CDT SuMMeR). The centre, which was established to deliver the next generation of innovative transdisciplinary engaged researchers, is led by the University of Plymouth, and brings six hosting, and four collaborative partners together with forty-five associate partners from industry, government, and third sectors.

The project at Heriot Watt University that NCIMB is involved with as an associate partner, aims to identify the biological and geochemical/physical processes involved in the fate of plastics under different environmental settings, with a focus on the microorganisms participating in this process. The student will be based at Heriot-Watt University, with opportunities to participate on research cruises, and be co-supervised by Bangor University and Marine Scotland Science, with support from the NCIMB.
