An acetogen capable of fermenting carbon monoxide and producing alcohols has been recently added to the NCIMB culture collection. The use of acetogenic bacteria for the fermentation of syngas to biofuels has been a topic of interest for researchers in recent years, as the need to move away from fossil fuel dependence intensifies.

The type strain NCIMB 15261 Clostridium muelleri (P21), was isolated from old hay, and it was deposited in the National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria by the University of Oklahoma.

NCIMB offers a range of microbiology and analytical services as well as curating the UK’s National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria – a reference collection of ACDP hazard group 1 and 2 microorganisms that includes many environmentally important and industrially useful bacteria, plasmids and bacteriophages. The collection is continuously expanding due to new accessions from the international research community.
